When designing an intake for a turbocharged engine, heat and volume are the primary considerations. In the Supra, the engine bay absorbs heat rapidly as the intake system is located next to the exhaust manifold. Since the turbocharger must boost with hot, less dense air, the only way to minimize IATs is to utilize a fully sealed intake. However, this creates the constraint of having only one factory air feed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDuring development, we noticed an opening in the wheel arch and utilized it to add a second feed to the airbox. Furthermore, the sealed airbox features a heat shield with gold reflective lining to minimize radiant heat transfer from the exhaust manifold. To ensure maximum airbox volume, we created a recess for the strut brace, allowing the airbox to be as large as possible. The factory convoluted intake tube was replaced with a smooth carbon tube that has a large internal volume and tapers smoothly from 111mm (4.4 inches) to match the turbo inlet. This tube provides a smooth path from the filter to the turbo inlet.
